Garmin Recreational Map of Africa (Non-Routable)

Discussion of the maps available in South Africa in the various sub-folders: Garmap, Navteq, T4A, OSM, etc.
More sub-folders will be created as we go along and the need arises.

Tried to download it twice and it bombed out on me. Now using Free Download Manager (Thanks to Jan for that tip) to download the colossus. Will keep all posted once it's downloaded.

Hi all,

Here is a screenshot I took of it when viewed in BaseCamp with the map installed on my Nuvi.
Rec Map of Africa.jpg
And when compared to Garmap SSA Streetmaps 2013.1 NT
Garmap SSA 2013_1 NT.jpg
Hope this helps

Darryl

P.S. I tried to use the same area as a frame of reference for both screenshots. Familiar looking area.

Thanks for The screenshots, Very familiar area for me.
Looks like OSM !
Maybe useful for tour visitors not driving in the continent, backpackers, Hitch hikers, Walkers.
Or if you just want to look at countries not featured in City Navigator.
POI looks Good.
Have you tried to route on it ? I'm wondering if it will at least give you the Basemap route ?
I've heard that Garmin is taking an interest in OSM and Linux (both technically freeware).
I guess that you just got the gmapsupp.img to copy directly to GPS.
Can you please describe the installation procedure for the benefit of Users.

Hi all,

Once the zipped file is downloaded, using an archive extraction utility (7-zip, etc.), extract the zip file to a folder on the Desktop. The final file size as reported by Windows is around 1.87GB (that's right, 1.87GB) and it does not fit onto a 2GB Micro-SD card. It does however fit onto a 4GB MicroSD card with room to spare.

I created a folder on the Micro-SD card (in the Nuvi, that was connected to the PC) called "garmin" and copied the gmapsupp.img file into the folder that was just created. Once the file was copied to the Micro-SD card, I enabled it under Tools > Settings > myMaps > Recreational map of Africa. Disabling all other present mapsets and only using the Recreational map of Africa, I tried routing to POI's that are listed on the mapset and this resulted in the GPSr using straightline routing to the POI's.

It would seem you would have to use 2 mapsets running concurrently on the GPSr for the Recreational map of Africa to be of any benefit. Will test it out and report back.
