Problem Solved. The good people at Garmin could also not download tha data; the problem was with the unit. They confirmed that the Nuvi 1200 is compatible. As the unit was still under warranty,they replaced it (with a better unit).

As I understand Garmin's wording, the unit is compatible but the functionality may be different. I have taken the issue up with Garmin, and I'll keep you posted on what the outcome is. Thanks for the replies.
