Hi All,

I have added a weather module that collects and displays the weather for any given city in the world. The nifty part is that the members can also enter their hometowns and it will display the weather for this. To get to the setting that is located in the User Control Panel, I will explain it step by step:-

1.) When viewing the portal page under the User Menu, click on the link User Control Panel.
2.) In the UCP, click on the Profile tab.
3.) Scroll down to where you see Birthday: and below that you will see City:.
4.) Enter the name of the town/city where you are resident. (Please note! As explained in the text, the format has to followed exactly for it to work.)
5.) Click on Submit and go back to the portal page, scroll down to the weather module, and if all the info is entered correctly, you will see the weather forecast for your town/city.

The database that is used is not necessarily the most up to date. If your town/city is not listed, PM me your town/city and I will add it to the list.

From the slow speed of this forum, and yesterday's crash, it would seem that this server setup is not ideal.

As a non-IT person, I have run a forum of my own (http://www.mechmate.com/forums/index.php) and left it to IT people in the USA to do the backroom work. It surely did cost more to run than Darryl's setup, but it was bulletproof, and fast. (I talk past tense because I recently sold the forum to someone else who might have changed some things in the background)

Unfortunately, it revolves around money. One probably talks of R200 to R300 per month to have a solid, fast service where the hosting company does backups and a couple of free restores when the Admins mess up data by mistake.

A Forum can become a very valuable asset in the long run. (Some make it Others Don't)

I will be the first to agree. Becuase here are the facts:-

1.) The ADSL configuration that is currently being used is a 384kbps line that Telkom will be upgrading to 1Mbps line as from September (Hang in there guys! Amper daar!)
2.) The server configuration:-

2.1) Intel Pentium II / Pentium II Xeon / Celeron running at 433MHz
2.2) Real memory 768MB
2.3) 2 x 40GB Hitachi HDD's configured in a RAID1 array (Failover)
2.4) Intel 21143 10/100baseT NIC

3.) The OS (FreeBSD). Not a plug 'n play system, as it uses good old command-line prompt (like MS-DOS days?), but the best choice of OS for web, ftp or any other server (that also can be configured for load-balancing and failover. My next experiment is to get 2 units to act as such.).
4.) Programs that work on FreeBSD are freeware and are best compiled on the platform they need to be used on.
5.) Backups!! I almost always forget to do this before making changes, but I am making a concerted effort to do it before I want to add a new feature.
6.) Me. I am paying schoolfees deluxe while trying to keep things going right and at times manage to break things while trying to make it work better.

That said, I am still chuffed that we (the forum) got it going albeit the above.

Deposits for the improvement of the server may be given do Darryl, he will gladly accept them. In the mean time we have to accept what we get for free. Again, a lot of effort and time was spent by quite a few people to get this forum in place. If anybody is dissatisfied with anything on this forum (speed etc), they are welcome to leave. Sorry guys, my 2 cents.

Sure Hennie, it is a free world.

But if people who were interested in joining, and contributing to the forum, find that their contributions are deleted because of server crashes, they will quickly lose interest and wander away. No new member respects, or cares, how much work goes on behind the scenes . . . . believe me, I have experience of that.
