What is the big red encirled plus for

Post by Montana »

@ Dasilvarsa.

I need some help with the new 3490 please. Whilst driving there is a big + (plus) encircled in Red on the lower righthand corner. What is the purpose of that? Seems to me its got something to do with speed. It always stays a plus no matter if it is highway driving or not. Shouldn't the speedlimit be indicated in the circle in place of the +? I so where does one switch it on?

I must say my old 1410 is much better in my opinion. The screen was much easier to read and the map display much better. I just have a feeling that by aquiring the 3490 I downgraded. Maybe later when I'm more used to it, it would probable be more functional but for now, I'm very dissapointed in the 3490.
Step outside, the graphics are amazing.

If you are using City Navigator then the speed limit should be displayed in that Circle if data is available.(A lot of the smaller roads show +)
If data is not available if you press the circle you can set the speed limit for that road.

If you are using Garmap or T4A the Circle will always show a + until you set the limit yourself.(I think you have to set it in both directions)

OK thanks. I think I have it sorted out. It also depends on the dashboard one uses. Some don't show the circle. I was travelling on the N2 near George this afternoon and the circle remained with the + sign. The maps installed on mine that came with it is Southern Africa DEM, CN Southern Africa NT 2013.30 3D and CN Southern Africa NT 2013.30 ALL. Additionally I also have the latest T4A Map for the Western Cape. They were all switched ON.

Also strange is that so far I have not seen the turn arrows in the top Left corner for an upcoming turn. Your screenshot shows it. I was using a selected destination so it should have shown the next turn coming up with distance indication.

Do you also use the same maps that I use or do you use the Garmin variety?

I"ve got the same Maps as you, I don't have t4a
I suggest you switch off t4a when not in the Bush.
CNSA and T4 are both primary maps and we should only use one at a time.
This might explain why you are not getting the speed limits.

Montana, my 3590 does exactly the same + if I have more than just the CN maps selected ie CN and SSA selected at the same time. The moment I deselect the SSA maps, the + turns into the speed rating for the road you are travelling on as it is part of the CN map functionality. The moment your actual speed exceeds the speed rating for the road you are travelling on, the speed indicated in the circle will also turn red. I suspect the same goes for the lane indication (turn arrows) although I have not tested this.

Thanks Hennie. I have deselected the T4A as suggested by Joe and it gives the correct indication now. I've noticed that the other dashboards also show it in a different position. I have also noticed that the speedlimit indicated on the unit is not up to date in my town and vicinity (George, Western Cape) and I have to adjust it manually.

I have also deselected the DEM maps as they clutter up the screen and some times obscures the road. Maybe its my eyes that could be the problem. Fact is I don't like the DEM on the screen.

I just like to add that if you have T4A selected you lose the speed limit as we have agreed, you also lose the Junction View and lane Asssist ans Some of the Voice Command Functions.
I don't have T4A but have tested with free map from OpenStreetMaps and the same happens.
I Switch off the DEM in Town also, but on a long trip the DEM is NICE, (You can see places where the Goats Walk).

That is correct Joe. Thanks. Will use DEM on long route.

I have sorted out the speed limit indication now. It shows the speed limit on the road only when one uses a definate destination (Go or Route). It also works with T4A switched on.

The speed limit indication does not work if one just drives around on the map without a destination selected.
