3590 Issues - Battery flat

#1263

Post by otto_roth »

Hi,

Being on leave I drive short distances (vs 25km x 2 to work) and found that I can drive to the shop (say 5km) but if I start on my return journey, the 3590 is and stays "dead" with a feint, what looks like a "burn-in" as with the old monitors and if I pull over into the shade one can faintly see "Battery Flat" or something to that effect on the display.

After driving a short distance and pressing the on/off button long, the Garmin logo comes up, loads maps, warning and then works showing power as full green battery.

Then I noticed (Normally I have the Screen Capture on so one can't see the battery icon) that when I shut down the vehicle, in addition to its trip report, the battery icon drops to about 75%, 50%, 25% (in brown or is it red) and I am not sure who wins - either the auto shut down or the Battery that is flat.

I took some footage with my cell - I will see if I can somehow upload it to this thread.

I read somewhere that if the unit gets very hot the battery won't charge.
Try charging it on the computer through usb.(takes about 4 hours)
Even if the battery is flat it should run on the mount ??
Maybe your battery has had it.
I think Garmin will probably replace your unit for this problem.

Hi Erich,

Further to the info from Joe. Have you looked to see if your unit is not possibly a unit for recall, due to the battery problems you are experiencing? I recall when I had a Nuvi 200 and had the unit constantly connected to the car charger. After a while the unit exhibited the problem of the battery not holding the full charge for the determined period of time ( 2 to 4 hours). It was down to around 15 to 30 minutes and would die. The charge would start off on 100% and suddenly I would get a "Battery Low" warning. Admittedly that was after 3+ years of operating like this. I eventually sold the unit due to this problem and was not prepared to fork out money for a new battery that was equivalent in price to a newer unit.

If yours is a new unit, I agree with Joe. Take it into Garmin for them to have a look at the problem.

I had a similar problem with very short battery life with my 710 some time ago.
On the "old" forum there was a fair amount of discussion about this.
I managed to find a video on U-Tube showing how to change the battery and it seemed to be simple enough. I bought a battery on the net from Singapore I think, for a landed cost of about R 40.00 which included a plastic tool for opening the unit.
I changed it myself and although I don't use this unit much now, the battery life is still better than it was when new.
If anyone is interested, I can look up the details of where I bought it as i have also bought a Camera battery from them at a fraction of the cost locally and with no problems.

Hi Silver Fox,

Can we ask you to get the information and post it under the forum entitled "Useful information and links" found here:-

useful-information-and-links/

I am sure that there will be a great deal of benefit derived from having it here.

Thanks for all that feedback and comment. I did mail support@garmin.co.za on the 30th but have not heard anything back from them - not even an acknowledgement of receipt! ( I did a few support requests to over-seas companies over the festive season and I am always amazed the quick response I get regardless of it being a week-end or even Xmas! !)

Hi, I have a 35790 I bought at Makro in Nov 2012.

Product name: nüvi® 3590LT
Registration date: Nov 13, 2012 9:19:30 AM GMT
Serial number:
Unit Id:
Tracker ID:
Registration Code:
Software Version Number: 7.50

Initially it did the odd reboot just after start up but lately, it regularly refuses to start.

I am not keen to take it back to Makro Ottery nor to your Muizemberg office as that is 1) very inconvenient, and, 2) means I will be without the unit for an extended period.

I attach the event logs and shutdown reports – Possibly there is something obvious set wrong, incorrectly or a pre-warning that will result in a visit to your offices a single trip?

Please consider and get back to me soonest!

Regards

Anyway - what I HAVE FOUND IS:

If I get to the end of my trip, regardless of length, and I don't let the unit shut down it by itself ( I shut down but before it reaches 2, 1, 0 ) I press the on/off button on the unit, It dies (actually goes to sleep) and starts first shot on the next trip (might be 2 days later) WITH the CAMERA STILL SELECTED AND READY TO RUN! (No Garmin Boot Screen, Loading Maps, or Don't push Buttons when driving!)

Now does that sound like a flat battery?? (BTW: I did charge the unit a couple of times on my PC and/or a USB Cell charger (HTC or Nokia 920) )

Regards

Erich

Pressing The Power Button LONG gives you this.

Abnormal Powerdown

Basic Shutdown Information:
Error Type: Abnormal Powerdown
Product: nüvi 3590
Software Version: Software Version 7.50
Hardware Version: V10 2GB O36 DI TYC GTL

I just cleared my error log and then did one Long Powerdown/Reboot (Holding the Power Button for more than 10 Seconds)
Rechecked the error log and yes there was an entry there for the restart.

Your Initial POST does indicate that at the time you had a VERY flat Battery.

That is why it took a while for the unit to boot up after switching on the car. (I've had it too after hiking with the unit in my pocket for 3 hours)
Once the battery got charged it was fine again.

Going back to your first post.

When these units are connected to the mount and the battery is charging it always shows a full battery with a flash Gordon Logo Inside it.
This tells you the unit is charging. and Not that the battery is FULL.
Even if the battery is full it still shows the same.
When you use it off the mount it shows the actual battery capacity.
If you've just taken it off the mount it shows full for a while and then drops to the (real) capacity.

I have done something similar but I will do it as per your procedure and get back to you!

My 1410 has a charger but the 3790 and 3590 did not but my cell phones have the same thin USB plug chargers (HTC and 920). IF I DO plug it into these power supplies, it goes over to linked to computer mode and not just GPS on external Mode???

No Problem if it shows computer it still charges.
If you want to see the Charging milliamps.
Press the battery Icon for 10 seconds until Screen Changes and the plug it into the charger and you can see charging current.
After it's finished it will say done.
