The reason for it going into computer mode when you use the cell phone charger is in the charger supplied by Garmin two pins are bridged out to prevent it going doing that. When you use the cell phone charger it does not detect the bridged pins and assume you have connected to a computer USB port. There was a long discussion on the subject of using other chargers to charge a Garmin in the Garmap forum at the time and someone posted a schematic of the pin arrangement showing which pins to bridge which with a sealed plug is impossible to do in any case. Joe is quite right it will charge the battery like when you are plugged into USB port.
