OVERLAYING MAPS
Hi Folks,
I have a Nuvi 40 - my first GPS :-) A present from UK.
It came with only UK and ROI maps - which I will use on visits - but obviously I need RSA maps.
I like both the Sub Saharan Street Maps and the Garmap Southern Africa Topo and Rec map.
I know that I can add them to the device via the SD Card. But what I would really like to do is have the Street Maps OVERLAID on the Topo.
Is that possible? Can someone advise me please?
Thank you.
Ian

Re: OVERLAYING MAPS
Welcome to the forum Ian. The Topo Maps use the same basic data as Sub Saharan Street maps with the Farm boundaries and contour lines added. You will gain nothing to load both maps and it is not recommended to have two maps active at the same time in any case. Buy the unlock license for the Top and Rec maps first, once you have unlocked Topo and Rec Garmap will not charge you for the unlock code for the Sub Saharan Street maps. This is a tip given to me by one of the Garmap Technicians some time ago. Enjoy your Nuvi 40.

Re: OVERLAYING MAPS
Unfortunately you cannot use the TOPO and REC maps on a Nuvi 40. Here is the information as taken from the Garmap website: "Please be advised that Garmin’s new PND range* and future PND products produced from 2012 onwards have not been designed to support the Garmap Topo & Rec map product. *nüvi 30, 40, 50, 2495LT, 2595LT, 3490LT, 3590LT, nüLink! 2390"

Re: OVERLAYING MAPS
Thanks Jaco That slipped my mind. It may be an option to go for the City navigator Pan African maps which is based on the same data as Garmap supplied by Tomtom. At R1250 it will be very similarly priced as the Garmap Topo & Rec for an device that did not come preloaded with one of the local map sets. It has a lot of features that is currently only available on The CN maps by a far wider coverage area. It is compatible with the Nuvi 40
Here are a summery of the features it contains.
•Includes more than 4.8 million km (3 million mi) of roads, including motorways, national and regional thoroughfares and local roads.
•Covers more than 1.9 million km (1.1 million mi) of non-routable paths and tracks for the ultimate off-road experience.
•Displays more than 625,000 points of interest throughout the country, including restaurants, lodging, petrol/gasoline stations, attractions, railways and more.
•Gives turn-by-turn directions on your Compatible Device on the routable road network.
•Speaks street names (example: "Turn right on Main Street")
•Includes navigational features, such as turn restrictions, roundabout guidance, speed categories and more on the routable road network.
•Contains traffic data for compatible devices that use traffic receivers on the routable road network. For more information and to download visit https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=117106

Re: OVERLAYING MAPS
I would actually suggest that you buy another local Nuvi 40 with Lifetime Maps for +- R1349.
If you buy the City Navigator or Pan Africa Online you will not get the premium features.
You will not get Lifetime Maps.
The Local Nuvi 40 comes with Lifetime maps for RSA and all the Premium Features available on the Model.

Joe I am not sure which premium features you are referring to?
You can buy Lifetime maps for any compatible unit for R849 at https://buy.garmin.com/en-ZA/ZA/prod89035.html

Re: OVERLAYING MAPS
When you buy any City navigator map online from Garmin Website it's a ONE TIME purchase and you will not get Junction view, 3 Buildings, 3D terrain, ASR Voice Command support for the Map, etc (these are some of the premium features that I'm refering to.)Jan Horn wrote:Joe I am not sure which premium features you are referring to?

You can only buy Lifetime Map update if your Garmin was Originally Loaded with a Particular City Navigator Mapset.
You Cannot get Lifetime for Garmap at all. (Even though Garmin also sells Garmap Online)
When you buy a New LM or LMT product in RSA it is preloaded with City Navigator Southern Africa with all the premium features for that device enabled by default.
You can update your Map for Free for 60 days by default. (the Premium Features will also be updated)
Inside the Box is the NuMaps Lifetime Card which you have to redeem at the Garmin Website to Give your unit the rights to Download Maps for the Lifetime of the Device. (Only the Pre-Loaded Map can be converted to Lifetime.)(the Premium Features will also be updated)
e.g. You cannot get Lifetime for Pan Africa because no Garmin units have ever been sold with Pan Africa pre-loaded.(Maybe in the Future, Who Knows?)
You cannot get Premium features for Pan Africa even if you purchase the map Online.
The Crux of the Matter is that it is Currently more Cost Effective to buy a new device with Lifetime Maps than to Purchase Maps.
You basically get the unit(Nuvi40) , a new charger, a new mount for just a little more money than the Map purchase alone.
You also get your Map Updates for Free for the Lifetime of that unit. (+- R849 in value)
