I have to post this;
I can see why all my friends will not buy a Tom Tom!
I recently got one as a gift - they didn't use it, so now I am.
I'm struggling my GAT off to find a mount for it (as per previous posts) but when I contact TT via e-mail, phone or whatever - they can't help me at all.
There is obviously a big different between 'can't help you' and 'not bothering at all' and TT 'can't be bothered at all'
I was told "your unit has been discontinued' but that is beside the point - I have the unit, it works, so I want to use it and I know you must have stock of the accessories somewhere!
ARG! I'll honestly NEVER buy a TT - rather stick to Garmin!
Tom Tom

Re: Tom Tom
Nicolas I will point Shorty in this direction. If anybody can help you at Tomtom it will be Shorty. He has been around with as on the Garmap Forum for ages and he is currently involved with Tomtom Forum and may have a few contacts around there.

Try Bandit GPS on 011 708 6552. I have found they keep a good stock of accessories, both Garmin and Tomtom. They are based at Kya Sands near Randburg, however my son has ordered from them in the past and they have couriered the items to him.

Not really related to the topic. Please point me to the correct topic if it already exists.
What is the difference between Garmin and Tom Tom. My Garmin I just switch on and there it goes. Is Tom Tom as easy?
Thanks

Re: Tom Tom
Hi Martin,
The newer TomTom's are easy when it comes to switch on and work. The known caveat I have had is here and was more specific to a software upgrade:-
http://www.gps-users-forum.co.za/tom-tom-tt-gpsr-units/tomtom-start-20-problem-t246.html
You can however use the older TomTom's (that uses TomTom Home software and connects to a PC like a flash drive like a Garmin would). These are more frequently the units that can be successfully hacked to work with added features. Accuracy wise, the two makes are very good with positioning and are at worst 00° 00.002' degrees out.
Hope this helps.
Darryl

Re: Tom Tom
Perhaps chat directly to Shorty on this: I know that when it comes to TT vs. Garmin, the TT has (or had) a problem navigating to any point not situated on an actual national road.
I bought my SWAMBO a TT and when it was unable to navigate to a specific point in a parking area - although it COULD navigate to the parking area, per se, if so desired - I returned the unit and got a full refund. Specifically, if I requested the unit to take me to the Hyperama in Edenvale, it did so. However, if I saved a specific location in that parking area (the parking spot right outside the nail accessories shop) as a favourite, and asked the TT to navigate me to that spot, it failed. It would not even start the calculation. My Garmin Oregon 300, as well as her subsequent Nuvi 1300 performed the task flawlessly.
The problem was (is?) that the TT cannot or will not navigate to the nearest position on a national road and then point you in the general direction of the actual point you have input.
The Garmins I have used, can all navigate to the point in question.
As I say, just check on this with Shorty. TT may have fixed their software.
