e-TOLL's will fail

#2277

Post by Stalker »

Alliance against urban tolling statement at 5pm yesterday reported that their in-situ electronic sensors confirm 985,322 vehicles passed through William Nicol gantry, and only 1,339 of them were SANRAL registered with an e-tag.
This is a massive setback for SANRAL. On day one at one toll gate alone, they now have to send out almost a million accounts!
The system is close to collapsing folks. Lets persist to resist!
On the day of the launch, 702 reporter Barry Bateman visited SANRAL Central Control room and reported that the only staff there where 6 to 10 computer staff ensuring that the computers were running correctly! Wonder who is going to look at all the “photos” and send out the Invoices to the remaining 983983 users?

I hope that e-tolls do fail for the sake of the middle-class.
I'm also one of the people that has not purchased an e-tag and do not plan to do so in the near future.

However at the moment there are many "myths" and "Urban Legends" regarding e-toll

e-toll uses ultra high speed modern networks and powerful modern computers, billing is done by "numberplate recognition" and not by a clerk viewing pictures.
Manual billing will only come into play if your numberplate is not recognized, 99% of number plates are compatible with the system. Number plate recognition is nothing new and is currently used in the ASOD system in Natal and in mobile "road blocks".

Generation of Bills are done with computers at night when the public sleeps without human intervention. The banks generate millions of "statements" monthly and their computer systems do not "fall over".

Another Myth "Sanral is not connected to e-natis" Truth "Sanral is directly connected to e-natis"

I never entered into a contract with Sanral why do I have to pay ?
Did you enter into a contract to pay VAT ?
By driving on a Toll Road you are compelled by Law to pay for the service.

e-toll is not like a traffic violation, A traffic violation is when we have broken a traffic law and need to pay a fine in order to be punished for the wrongdoing.
Going through a Gantry without an e-tag is in itself not an offense and no law is being broken "nothing wrong". As long as you pay your bill.
Driving without a legal numberplate is however a traffic violation just like driving a vehicle without a license.

Refusing to pay for the service is where the problem come in.
It will be treated the same as any other outstanding overdue debt and I hope that the public realizes that.

And to add to what Joe is saying my understanding through what I read is that all transactions for any specific registration number for a week will be combined into one account. Although this reduces the number of accounts that need to be send out it will still, based on the above information for one gantry for one day amount to more that 4 million accounts per month.
