New technology in speed enforcement
Hi all,
I had the privilege of seeing new technology in action today. This is what it looks like:-
This is a new speed camera that is angled at 22 degrees from perpendicular to the road, casting 2 Class C radar beams across the two lanes of traffic. The speed camera can be programmed to measure the speed of both cars and trucks, and take pictures of both at the preprogrammed speeds in the system. I also had the privilege of seeing it in action when a vehicle sped past at 100km/h in the 80km/h zone.

Re: New technology in speed enforcement
mmm... wonder who the tenderpreneur is?
Concrete parallel to the road and not supporting the baseplate completely.
With only 2 fasteners (17mm spanner?) how do they align these boxes horizontally, or is the camera align-able inside the box?
Must say, parking in front of it and with my chair next to it, that looks like a very reachable height for me to put my beer can on.
OK Ok, I will put a coaster on top first!

Re: New technology in speed enforcement
Do you have any technical information Darryl. Why two beams? At an angel like that how does it correct the speed measured?

Re: New technology in speed enforcement
Hi,
The only reasonable technical info I have, is what was told to me by the traffic officer who was busy installing the camera. The one beam is for the one lane and the other for the second lane. So you can have it working on either a two lane highway or a dual carriage road. The nuts that bolt it to the cement slab are quite big (I estimate around 50 to 60 mm across the flats). The angle is for proper coverage of the two lanes (either 2 lane highway or dual carriage road) by the radar beams. The Class C radar beams are used for the purpose of preventing the signal beams from being jammed or experiencing interference. Further than this I can't help much, but let's see if I can find out more during my travels. By the way, the price tag? R600 000.00

I have given the details through to Frans of the 2 known locations in the Ventersdorp district. Whether these devices are being deployed across KZN, I cannot say at this stage of the race. But we do ask the forum members to keep their eyes peeled for these new cameras.
