Can Navtec maps be used on older Garmin Gps's??
Prove me wrong if i am disappointed in this whole Garmin fairy tail.
If anybody likes to take me on, please feel free to do so.
Sorry everybody but i have lost trust in Garmin. Please help me on the right track again.

Welcome back Johan. Some the older Garmin Units may not be compatable with City Navigator maps while others will be. While you may upgrade to lifetime maps on those units that came preloaded with CN maps prior to lifetime maps became standard with new purchases you will have to pay around R650 for each new upgrade release if you want to convert an older unit to CN. It would not be worthwhile and be more cost effective to purchase a new unit. A few years ago the new models where released with City Navigator Maps preloaded and we all knew that it was just a question in time as to when the Garmap series of maps would discontinued. The first to go was DEM followed by Topo & Rec and now Streetmaps. Avnic became GDA and GDA became GSA and the transformation meant that they became part of the Greater Garmin setup and the inevitable standardisation of map products.
The pro of switching to CN maps is Lane assist, junction view and speed limit display while the main con is that the CN range still have a very long way to go to catch up with Garmap range as far as quality and street coverage is concerned.

Hi Johan and Jan,

Jan, thanks for the information and hopefully this will be able to help Johan make an informed choice as to which route to follow. Johan, I hope that Jan has managed to shed light on your dilemma that you face and whether it will pay you to go the CN route. I will still provide the discontinued Garmap mapsets for those who prefer to stick to those (which can either be through copies of the original DVD's or downloadable from the forum's FTP server). Unfortunately I will not be able to help with the registration issues around these mapsets. It will probably just be a matter of time before the database with Garmap will become defunct due to the systematic phasing out of the registrants on their system and everyone will have switched over to CN mapsets. It also begs the question whether Garmap will make their mapsets opensource or how will the story work? It would be a shame to see such wonderful data going to waste.

Garmap going OpenSource will never happen.

Why ?
Garmap is Tom Tom Africa Data (Previously Tele Atlas Africa) compiled in Garmin IMG Format.

If you are happier with, and want Maps that use the same data as Garmap Maps just buy a Tom Tom GPS.
(Simple Solution).

Joe is correct in that the raw data to compile the Garmap series of maps was supplied under contract by TeleAtlas. TeleAtlas was subsequently purchased by Tom Tom. Garmin however had a long term contract with Navteq which around the same time was purchased by Nokia See this article
http://ec.europa.eu/competition/publica ... 8_3_70.pdf
Tom Tom currently still supply Garmin with the data for Garmin Africa Topo maps.
The Tom tom range of GPSr's are a very attractive alternative with the added advantage of having maps based on the same if not better data than what we had in the Garmap maps range.

Thanks Jan, Darryl and Dasilvarsa for comming back with some answers to a few of my questions. I must be careful not to attack Garmin.
I still believe the best way to do your route planning is to do it on your PC and export it to your Gps. TomTom got a problem with that.
Their is still a few things of GSA that i don't like and force me to ask questions.
1) They took away Topo and Rec. All the farm numbers that i make use of is gone.
2) They replace Mapsource with BaseCamp. Mapsource worked much more better for me.
3) They replace Garmaps with CN maps. Garmaps looks better and are more accurate.
4) They replace Routes with Trips. One big mistake.
5) Try to talk to the technical dept. in Zeis Road Laserpark and the people told you they moved to a nother place.
6) Start a new webpage for the forum because???
7) Jan mentioned it: "Don't upgrade the maps, buy a newer model gps." Same story with printers, "Buy a new printer
instead of new cartidges.
Then the last thing: How long will it take for Google Maps to take over and...........?
For the past year i am doing my routing with Google maps, convert them with a small utillity program and export the maps
to my Gps's. Working like a dream with TomTom and Garmin.

I warned you Darryl, thats why i sent you a PM and wanted to visit you here in Potch vrivate.

( Baie dankie vir julle manne se geduld wat ek tot die uiterste beproef. As enige van die forum lede dink ek is beledigend
teenoor GDA, verwyder my asb onmiddelik. Ek bly steeds 'n Garmin aanhanger ten spyte van al my opmerkings en aanhalings!!!!!)

Johan dit is `ʼn oop forum van “GPS GEBRUIKERS” so lank as jy by die bepaling van ons gedrag kode bly en ek haal aan ” You agree not to post any abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, hateful, threatening, sexually-orientated or any other material that may violate any laws be it of your country, the country where “www.gps-users-forum.co.za” is hosted or International Law.” kan jy nie by ons in die sop wees nie.

Johan,

I am glad you have a platform, where you can vent your disappointment about the history of a good product that is no longer available. One person's complaints may not necessarily be heeded, but the multitude of suggestions and information has helped you to make a more informed decision. Debate over the pro's and con's of products and services (in our case GPSr's and maps) is always welcome, as this ensures the forum remains unbiased to a particular brand. Since a majority of the forum members own Garmin devices, we are still looking for new members to join who have other manufacturer's units and we encourage them to join. Admittedly TomTom users won't readily join our forum, due to them having a forum run by TomTom that does provide assistance by peers and experts. But who knows? Things change in the blink of an eye. And remember, good debate is healthy.

I am moving the topic to the Stress Relieving Forum to find a better home for it.
