Toll Gantries avoidance with a Nuvi 3790
Hi,
I'm not a frequent visitor to Gauteng Toll roads with all its toll Gantries and every time I venture on this routes I select to avoid the toll gates, but to no avail. I already have a stack of bills.
Today I had to take my wife Chris Hani Baragwaneth hospital with the same story through the toll gantries. I always selected faster routes along with the avoidances.
Coming back I selected shorter routes with the avoidances, and it seemed to really avoid the toll gantries.
Is this the answer? Avoidance plus shorter distance?
Warm Regards
Swannie

Re: Toll Gantries avoidance with a Nuvi 3790
Hi Swannie,
It would seem that the latter set of settings on the GPSr is what is needed to avoid the Toll Gantries. I checked those settings (ie. Avoidances to include Toll Roads and Shorter Distances) on Mapsource with two points at opposite ends of Jo'burg (one in Krugersdorp and one in Isando). I checked the 4 possible permutations and the Avoidances with Shorter Distance does the trick to avoid the Toll Gantries. We would need to get a volunteer to do a trial run from a known location to another with these settings to confirm they work. I'm pretty sure that the settings will work.

Re: Toll Gantries avoidance with a Nuvi 3790
I don't think that Garmin has marked the Gantries as Toll Roads on City Navigator Maps as Yet.
I don't have a way to check this of course. (Pure Speculation)
On the 3490 I've Painstakingly done custom avoidance for every one of the 43 Gantries.
This works fine until Map Update Time and then I have to do it all over Again.

Re: Toll Gantries avoidance with a Nuvi 3790
Using the CN Southern Africa NT 2014.3 mapset, I entered a waypoint in Helderkruin as a starting point for a new route and a waypoint in Isando as a destination point. I told the Mapsource software to calculate a route using Faster Time and Toll Roads unchecked in Avoidances. Here is the resulting image from Mapsource:-
Then I did a recalculation of the route to avoid Toll Roads and use the Shorter Distance option when calculating a route using the same 2 waypoints. Here is the resulting image from Mapsource:-
Hope this helps.

Re: Toll Gantries avoidance with a Nuvi 3790
On a recent visit to Helderkruin area I spent some time defining the ring road (South and North loops and both directions) as Avoidances from the Alberton Intersection. I sent the route from my PC to the Zumo but must have forgotten to set the re-calculate to off because when we set off the next morning the route was all over the country (about 1200+km ie twice the N3 distance). On checking the Routing on the Zumo I noticed that the sliding preference scale (beween freeways and back roads) was set at 50%. I was able to route back to the N3 by increasing bias towards freeways and I found the avoidances I'd set were still applied.
Darryl, I have just checked your suggestion (on my PC) and even on my 2010 map it works perfectly to avoid the ring road and its tolls. It is something I will have to remember to check when the route includes toll roads that you want to use and others that you may not want to travel on...

Re: Toll Gantries avoidance with a Nuvi 3790
Hi Joe,
Good one that! +1 there. It would seem that the CN mapsets aren't that good on avoiding the Toll Gantries. I checked that same set of info with the Garmap SSA Streetmaps and it calculated a route through Linbro Park (and even I could pick that up with a quick glance of the mapset in front of me). My suggestion would be to have a copy of CN and a copy of SSA on a device and to switch between the two mapsets where necessary to avoid the Toll Gantries. Thanks for the waypoints that show where the Gantries are.
@Swannie,
I would go so far as to suggest to have the two different mapsets (CN and SSA) installed on your PC and to check your routes prior to departure on the PC to see where you are likely to encounter the Gantries. I would suggest you download Joe's copy of the Toll Gantry waypoints and load them into Mapsource while checking your route. He has clearly marked them and it will make it easier for you to see where you might encounter the evil necessities in your travels.

Re: Toll Gantries avoidance with a Nuvi 3790
When we setup the etoll RHD Files I noticed that all the etoll gantries were marked on Garmap SAA 2013.2. That may account for the difference between SAA and CN.

Re: Toll Gantries avoidance with a Nuvi 3790
Garmap SSA Supports e-toll.
But if you select Avoid Tolls it Avoids all tolls, Even the N Road Tolls that you want to use and pay for.
This totally messes the routing.
Complicated !

Re: Toll Gantries avoidance with a Nuvi 3790
That is also true regarding Garmin SSA about the Avoid Toll Roads option. The next best option is to create a custom route with waypoints in and around the Greater Johannesburg to avoid the Toll Gantries, but to still use the Toll Road one would want to pay for. It's a case of being stuck between a rock and a hard place. This scenario is going to plague just about every savvy GPS user when visiting Gauteng or travelling on a similar Toll Road in South Africa. There must somehow be a way to get the GPSr to work around it and it's eluding us.
