Where do you mount your GPS'r

#2938

Post by Swannie »

I started of by mounting my Nuvi to the screen of the car, bur later decided I want it closer to me so I changed for a dash-mount, but it never kept stuck, even after using glue. The vibration from the car also made it vibrating, so now I'm back on a screen mount.
The newer models with the so called powerful magnet I suppose the suction cup stays on the screen and the unit is released from that when needed?
I would still prefer a unit mounted closer to the driver. I know, Iknow, you should not make adjustments while driving, but sometimes i have the time while waiting in the traffic.

Hi Swannie,

The fundamental rule when mounting a GPSr in a car is:-

It must be mounted so as not to block the line of sight of the driver in any way.

Hope this helps.

I'm also mounting on the screen. Did try a dash mount but it was also not suitable.

I have purchased extra suction cups and fitted one to each vehicle, on the screen. Now I don't have to remove the suction cup, resulting in a stable mounting point.

A tip that I learned long time ago is to spray a small amount of silicone spray on the rubber of the suction cap. The mount does npt fall off. It blocks the effect of the sun on the rubber. After 6 years the mount of my nuvi 200 is still good as the day I bought it.The only disadvantage is the small "oily" like residue it leave behind on the wind screen when you remove the mount.

i ended up getting one of these from the US, works perfectly. Just something to thing about though, depending on your cd location, it might cover up some of the buttons on your radio that you use regularly.

Looking at simonbee's attachment it brings me to another point of preference as to choice of point your GPSr is mounted. Some cars come readily fitted with their GPSr's, but they are all below normal driving view, like for instants your radio. In the case of radios they fitted buttons on the steering wheels, so you don't have to look down at the radio, but to look at lane changes and such on the GPSr you have to look down. I prefer it above dash height on the right side in the corner of the screen.
Then there is the choice dual view. Shorty once said he prefers the upright position, because he wants to know whats in front and not at the sides. I kept to his advice until I moved it to the right side corner with the letters being much larger for typing.

I agree with Swannie on that I prefer as little as possible eye movement to see the screen. I mount mine very low on the windscreen so that the bottom touches the top of the dashboard slightly off centre on my left hand side. Being tall it does not obscure my line of sight at all.

i have a ford ranger, the cd player is mounted high up. i hate having a gps on the windscreen or obstructing the windscreen, to me, that is a danger.

Jan,
I always wondered as to the choice of Left hand side, unless of course if you are left handed.
No one else in my car look at the GPSr except me, so placing it on the left only makes it more difficult to alter routes at a stop.
So why do you mount it on the left?

Right handed Swannie. When I still swotted I taught my self to operate the calculator with my left hand and write the results down with my right hand. I guess the habit stayed with me and I never even gave it a thought when I mounted my first GPS. Typing left handed is no problem to me. I also find the left hand mounting convenient as I prefer using the rear view mirror instead of the side mirrors (accept when in heavy traffic). Being flat the inside rear view mirror give the true distance to the car behind you compared to the side mirrors.
