Garmap Website Closing Down

Discussion of the maps available in South Africa in the various sub-folders: Garmap, Navteq, T4A, OSM, etc.
More sub-folders will be created as we go along and the need arises.

Post by Phillip Coetser »

Hi Guys, for information, I've noticed that the Garmap website http://www.garmap.co.za/, is closing down as from the 1st Jan. 2015. (PLEASE NOTE:
This website will close 1 January 2015. The GARMAP range of map products have been discontinued and is no longer available. No product activations will be available after midnight on the 31st of December 2014. Please contact Garmin Southern Africa (0861427646) for recommended alternative cartography products.)

Hi Phillip and Frans,

Invariably if you do type in Garmap's website address after 1 January 2015, then it will more than likely take you to Garmin SA's website (http://www.garmin.co.za). Garmin would hopefully realise the benefit of rerouting traffic from the Garmap website to theirs. But then again we are talking about a big American corporate that won't even be bothered if they miss a few hits from the old website that earned them a loyal client base in South Africa. We might just even see a shift at consumer level away from the most popular brand due to management decisions that have not taken local knowledge into account.

If they want me to stay with Garmin, they should seriously attend to their mapset.
I foresee Tom Tom is going to get a lot of Ex-Garmin customers because of Garmin's attitude.

Let's get that City Navigator mapset error thread going with all the feedback evidence!

And I am not even going to start on the Lifetime Traffic topic again.
Altech Netstar says, no nothing wrong on our side, go talk to Garmin. Garmin says no, not on our side, go see Altech Netstar.
So I just don't bother anymore about Lifetime Traffic.

Download all your GMA files and keep them safe before the Website closes down.

Now this is sad (and bad) news, but I guess it was to be expected

Please help me on this: I have a Nuvi 760 that I have had to format/reload a few times already. It still works perfectly and I do not want to change the unit. Previously I reinstalled the maps from the Garmap DVD and unlocked them online. I assume this online feature will no longer be available. The question is: how do I reinstall and unlock the mapset (that I paid for!!) when the website is taken down?

I really hope there is a simple solution to this

Thanks!!

Not a problem Dana. During the unlock process the gma file is saved in the AppData folder which may be hidden in some Microsoft os. If you still use the computer you used to unlock the maps for that GPSr just open the map in MapSource or BaseCamp And download the tiles you want the the GPSr. The system will find the gma file and download it to GPSr All the gma files of all the mapsets for all the GPSr's I have updated for the last 3-4 years are still on my computer. Here are 2 screenshots showing the path to the gma file and a Mapsource screen shot. To give you some idea of what to do.

I think I have mentioned this before, but maybe we (the forum members) should look into buying the technology and data from Garmap. We then continue to update it on our own and market it from here for a nominal fee to cover the costs incurred. Hopefully someone will be able to be our benefactor for this venture. Just a thought.

The problem could be twofold. We would need the software form Garmin to convert the data for use and encryption on the???? older units. Then we would have to enter into a agreement with Tom Tom for the supply of the data. Naturally both the companies would consider what is in their best interest.

Now this is very, very, seriously, good advice that everybody that's got a registered Garmap mapset, do before the end of the year!! :salute:

Cause if you have not got it backed up somewhere and you format your Pc, or buy a new one, then you are stuffed. :bye: :pullhair:
