Nuvi 55LM

#3266

Post by Silver Fox »

A rather belated Happy New Year to everyone.

I am considering replacing my 3760LT as it has never really been a great GPSr and sill "reboots" for no apparent reason as it has done since new with all the latest upgrades etc. and as the years creep on i would appreciate a bigger screen.

Someone has suggested the Nuvi 55LM as a suitable replacement. Has anyone had experience of this unit or any other suggestions on a suitable replacement ?

The one feature that I must have is to be able to download and store routes (trips) from BaseCamp or MapSource. The salesmen at both the local Makro and CUM do not seem certain on this feature!

Any other information on what to buy and where to buy would really be appreciated.

I had a quick look at the manual for the 55/65 and it seem that loading routes are not available for these two units. I have a 52 which is it predecessor and it cannot receive routes from Mapsource or Bascamp. It is a nice base model but if you need that feature you will have to go to one of the more expensive models.

I am moving the topic to the 5x forum

Thanks for the prompt reply Jan. It confirms what I thought. I often wonder how often unsuspecting people are sold the "wrong" items by sales people who don't know what they are selling.

When I bought my first GPS I was told by the salesman that the maps on the Nuvi 200 could not be updated and I ended up buying an outdated more expensive model.

Hi S Fox,

I don't know what the cost of the Nuvi 55LM is, but if you really want a great Nuvi, get yourself the Nuvi 3597LMT. I just found out this morning that above all the great features it also has a build in tracking utility which you can follow on you PC at home or your smart phone. You give excess to someone on his or her e-mail address and you can follow it with the software. No need to install software on your PC or phone. It works on a time basis from the GPS'R, maximum seems to be 24 hours on works on the smartlink to any Android phone. Just tested it and it is as accurate as your GPS'R itself.
There is still a great number of features that I have to master, but to me the Nuvi 3597LMT is a master piece by itself.

Thanks for all the assistance.

On browsing the Garmin website I came across this list of devices which can receive routes from BaseCamp.

I have posted the link to the list below if anyone else is interested.I see it is dated the 12th Jan this year so hopefully it should up to date

https://support.garmin.com/support/sear ... 0000000%7D

According to this list the nuvi 55/56 series does support this feature but I am still not sure if I have the courage to go ahead and buy one.

If this link does not work, let me know and I can copy a list of the units here.

I have a friend who recently bought a Nuvi 55. I do the map updates for him. I think he has 2015.2 on his unit and I have been holding back to see I when they release 2015.4 so I can call him to bring the 55 for a map update. I will give him a tinkle and invite him for coffee and a update to 2015.3 then I will l have first hand knowledge to share with you. If I remember correctly the 55 did not like Mapsource though but it did connect to Bascamp.
