Quest GPS

#4417

Post by wooden »

Hello everybody,

My name is Pieter Myburgh and I am from Pretoria. I am a Radio Amateur and do radio work for motorsport. The past few months have run into some problems with my Quest GPS. On my way to Dundee in KZN the GPS told me that Dundee does not exist, only to find that KZN map was not installed.....eish. On another trip to Secunda the the N14 dissapeared and had no routing capability.

Now here is the thing, I had SA Street maps v1.1 installed and by the looks of it is corrupted! The original CD is in bad shape as it got damaged/scratched. Currently im looking for a reasonable updated map cd/dvd to re-install the maps and gain functionality of my GPS again. I do have basecamp installed ver 4.6.2 and tracks4africa, a very old one - most of the roads do not exist on the map set.

Is there anybody who has a library that can assist?

Kind regards

Pieter

Welcome to the forum Pieter. Both Darryl and myself have an extensive Garmap Dvd Library available. Mine stretches back to 2009. I am not sure when Garmap started their new naming convention which included the release year in the version. I think V1.1 predates my library. What version maps do you have on your computer that is accessible with Basecamp?
My brother in law had a Quest and a Quest II. I will find out from him if he still have the DVD and what version maps are on it?

Hi Jan,

Thank you very much for your response, I got March 2008 from my brother in law today and downloaded the current Base Camp version A while back
It would be a bonus if one could get a version relative new than March 2008, that is if I can fit it into the Quest memory or should I say Quest compatible.

From what I understand from this forum is that the last update was in 2013, I doubt if it would work on the Quest, but one can only hope it does!
I have also bought a win CE model with iGO, to my disappointment the maps loaded on it was very old, 2012 I think and also the the very basic. The reasoning was that vehicle satnav uses iGO and that it should be at least up to date.

Having spent this money only to receive old stuff does not work. I rather keep the Quest let say i am lucky and 2010 SA Street maps work on it, i would be more than happy.
I still have a Magellan and Garmin 3plus and a 5, the Magellan color screen only have a compass!

Kind regards

Pieter

Yes the last Garmap release was 2013.2 but I don't think it was ever released on DVD only as a download. I have the 2013.1 DVD in my Library. I spoke to my sister earlier and they do have the 2013.1 DVD. Generating an unlock code may be a problem as the Garmap website has been closed down.
Loading the maps to the Quest will not be a problem as you need not load all the tiles of the mapset. By selecting only the tiles covering South Africa you can reduce the maps size to fit the memory of the Quest.
My Brotherin-law stays Basonia and I can PM you his telephone number it you are interested in taking a drive to copy the DVD.

Hi Jan,

Yes, thank you. I will make contact when going in that direction.

Besides WAZE and google offline maps, what do you guys think of Locus map and maps.me which is also off line GPS maps?

Kind regards

I have played around with Africa SOUTH OSM Topo and T4A but not with any of the other maps available. The problem with using any other map than City Navigator on the newer PND's is that you loose Lane assist and Junction view. For us rockspiders driving around
JHB or Cape Town once you are used to Junction view you are lost without it. Being in the wrong lane in rush hour can be quite a nightmare.
