The 20 most dangerous routes to drive in South Africa

#4442

Post by Phillip Coetser »

Hi guys, Phillip. For those of you, that travels a lot, take note note of the following, and I quote:

The 20 most dangerous routes to drive in South Africa have been preliminarily identified by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).

The list is made up of priority routes, based on the number of road crashes and fatalities that take place in all nine provinces in the country.

According to the RTMC, the country’s most dangerous provinces for road users are the Eastern Cape (EC), Limpopo (LM) and Mpumalanga (MP).

It says provincial road traffic information has identified particular routes in all provinces that require a “concentration of resources” in preventing road crashes.

The RTMC believes traffic authorities ought to pay priority attention to hazardous locations and routes in the deployment of their resources. According to the AA, the death toll in South Africa in 2016 increased by nine percent. Last year, 14 071 people died on the country’s roads. It was the highest death toll since 2007, when 14 290 people were killed.

Most fatal crashes take place in the evening between 19:00 and 22:00.

The following roads and routes have been identified as particularly hazardous to road users in South Africa:

Position Road Route Distance Province
1 N2 East London - Umtata 231 Km EC
2 N2 Umtata - Kokstad 188 Km EC
3 N1 Mokopane - Polokwane 58.4 Km LM

Quite interesting.
The N2 between Somerset West and Cape Town is a dual carriage freeway and should be very safe but it passes a township like Khayelitsha which I presume brings pedestrians into the equation.
The N14 Coligny to Biesiesvlei, I grew up in that area and would never have imagined that road to be in the top 20 most dangerous list.
