Social Media Login

#3218

Post by fugglefeet »

Hi all,

I have had a look at the above feature and have enabled the use of it. The forum members can link their existing social media logins to their forum logins. A quick tutorial will be given on how to link a social media login to a forum login (with pictures). Here are the supported social media logins currently:-

Right, let's get cracking linking a social media account to a forum login:-

1.) Login into the forum using the existing login details. Once the login process has been completed and the board index is being displayed in the browser window, follow onto step 2.

2.) Click on the User Control Panel link and this will show the UCP Overview:-

3.) Click on the Profile link and this will show the UCP Profile:-

4.) Scroll to the bottom of the Profile page and click on the social media icon that has a valid login:-

5.) Provide the login details associated with the corresponding social media account chosen in step 4:-

6.) Follow the login process for the social media login and the link between the 2 accounts will be established. A word of caution though, using a Facebook/Google/Youtube account with an identical Twitter account (Facebook username = Twitter username / Google username = Twitter username / Youtube username = Twitter username) will lead to a message that the social media login is in use by another registered user.

Hope this helps.

Hi all,

A note to all those that are registering using social media logins, please note that the forum will require you to confirm your registration by sending an activation link to the email address specified in your social media platform that was registered with. The email account may have spam filtering enabled and will more than likely classify the activation email as spam, so please do check to see if this has happened and if it has, then please click on the link contained in the email to complete the activation process for the ability to login to the forum using the new feature here.

Hi all,

Recently this feature hasn't been working and I have discovered that this is due to a few things for and against the forum software currently in use. The forum software we are using is outdated, but still secure against the onslaughts of spammers. The version of PHP that the forum software was designed to use, is outdated and the newest version doesn't seem to support the older version of forum software. The hosting provider has also locked the ability to change to an older version of PHP software for possible security reasons, thereby negating the use of this feature. Unfortunately this is going to entail that the forum is going to have to go through a complete overhaul software wise. The database will still stay intact and prior to this whole upgrade, a full backup will need to be done of "alles" so that we are in line with the latest and the greatest of shiny new software. This is something that at the current moment will be done over a period of time due to new developments that will see me in the greater Gauteng area permanently in the early part of the New Year. Please bear with the time span allocated for the upgrade procedure.
