Newbie

#4594

Post by Like a Boss »

Hello All

Decided to join this forum after searching the internet for some time. Am updating my old nuvi 1310. Realised that Garmap is no more and that OSM info is more freely available now. Real life gets busy at times...

I was updating my RHD and found your forum. Think I'm going to stick around.

Take care

Welcome to the GPS Users Forum. Yes we have been around since the Garmap forum was closed doen by Garmin with a few of the original forum members still sticking around. you are most welcome and any contributions will be appreciated and pleas feel free to share with us any information you feel pertinent. Help to solve problems and questions posted will also be appreciated.
A pity Garmin saw fit to terminate their association with the local map supplier in favor the City Navigator. The CN maps still have a very long way to go to get to the standard of the Garmap maps. Granted the there are innovations that are superior the what we had at the time with Garmap.
I experience the short cummings of CN on Tuesday again coming home to Welkom when due to being in the wrong lane at Gillooly's at 9:00 I had to stay on the R24. Instead of taking me back to the N12 I was taken for a merry drive around through the JHB CBD crossing the M2 twice until I cancelled the navigation completely powered down and then initiated the trip from scratch. All this at that time of the day.

Thanks for the updated RHD information from the forum. The format was the same as I had last used some years back. Included some red light / speed cam points I found on the POIplaza site too. Used Garmin POI Loader to compile the GPI file. Seemed to work correctly today!

On another note, the OSM map seemed to work correctly too, so I now have current road map data.

Just the POI search was worse when selecting the OSM map, with less points found and some unnamed. Any idea on how to improve on this?

Yes the RHD is basically the data you are used to but is has been extensively reworked by Frans to make where possible direction and lane specific. This eliminate most of the unnecessary warnings reducing irritation.

I have downloaded the Africa OSM Topo map set but have yet to install it on the laptop. Unfortunately you loose the lane assist and Junction view when not using the CN map set. The Map is good quality and I will try it out some day soon.

Some feedback on the OSM map road data that I have been using for a few days now. Generally it works very well, but in three instances so far I have found the road data not to be as up to date as Google Maps. Would be good to transfer those to my nuvi.

I did try this map set. It works very well with BaseCamp, but I found that the OSM maps generally are not as searchable as CN. Perhaps I compiled incorrectly. Has anyone else on the forum any experience with this?
