Average Speed Over Distance System
Hi all, for those forumites travelling North, and South on the N1, over the festive season, take note of the following, seen this here....and I quote, (https://businesstech.co.za/news/motorin ... ce-system/)
More South African highways move to ‘average-speed-over-distance’ system, the N1 between Pretoria and the border with Zimbabwe is one of the busiest freeways in the country and traffic volumes rise sharply at the start of the December holidays and close to the festive season.
Sanral said that the new technology is designed to improve the safety of road users and includes the installation of gantries, cameras and message boards to monitor speed on critical sections.
ASOD
One of the biggest changes introduced on stretches of the N1 is the installation of four gantries equipped with sophisticated camera and monitoring technology, Hlahla said.
The system uses average-speed-over-distance (ASOD) technology which calculates the average speed of a vehicle, measured from the time it passes a camera until it reaches a second camera at a fixed distance away.
Regards.

Re: Average Speed Over Distance System
Thanks Phillip. The theory behind the ASOD system is brilliant and in theory should cool speeding down. But in my frequent trips down to Cape town I noticed and realise that the general public think the gantries are just another speed trap and do not know what it is all about. The failure of the system is that the placing of the gantries are too far apart. Where these gantries are 30-100 km apart it is virtually impossible to exceed the 120 km average. All it need is a few trucks holding you up and bring down your average to below 120. Gantries should not be more than 5-1o km apart to really make the system efficient and do what it is supposed to do.

Hi,
My son visited the kruger he said the ASAOD between Kranskop toll gate and Mookgopong North an South are operational he did not get the coordinates.

Re: Average Speed Over Distance System
Hi all,..... the Average Speed Over Distance (ASOD) system calculates the average speed of a vehicle from the time it passes the first camera until it passes the second camera, being the "intermediate camera".This monitoring applies throughout the whole trip, until exiting such Asod zone. They work by using an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system to record a vehicle's front number plate at each fixed camera site. As the distance is known between these sites, the average speed can be calculated by dividing this by the time taken to travel between two points (this is done automatically). Excessive speeding in a Asod zone, will result in the driver being taken of the road and he/she will have to appear in court. Fair warnings are given when you enter or exit a Asod zone. Don't be fooled by thinking that this system is not working, it does. Also remember, that more and more "unmarked" vehicles are monitoring the roads.

Re: Average Speed Over Distance System
Hi Robsan, on the N1 there is currently 4 active Asod monitoring zones. The first zone starts at the Pumulani toll gate, going north, and ends at Carousel toll gate, and starting a new zone just after Carousel toll gate, and this zone ends at the Kranskop toll gate, then a new zone starts after the Kranskop toll gate and ends at the Nyl toll gate. The same applies going south. In between these zones are "intermediate cameras" monitoring speeds. To top it all, there is mobile speed cameras and traffic police activities all along this route.

Re: Average Speed Over Distance System
The "intermediate cameras" are actually the start and end of one ASOD section, as the law states that an ASOD section can not be in two magisterial districts.
But look at the attached png's for a section that starts in Mpumalanga and ends in Gauteng!
Plus minus 700 meters into Gauteng.
Reference to the attached link:
"The Director of Public Prosecutions gave permission for ASOD to be implemented
within only a single magisterial boundary, according to South African law. It would otherwise not
have been possible to determine in whose jurisdiction the offences were committed."
(With acknowledgement to Wouter van Velden)

Although only about 50 meters away from the Magisterial border,
if you were driving west, technically you will walk away in court.

Re: Average Speed Over Distance System
Another one that has been there for almost 9 Years is the Beaufort Wes to Aberdeen Asod. This was the original Western Cape Pilot project. I remember the announcement in the press at the time in 2011 claiming it to be the longest stretch cover being 71km. Now this one straddle the Western Eastern cape border.

Not always on gantries. Sometimes they are mounted on bridges like these in Mandela Boulevard

I would love to get the coordinates from this set.Jan Horn wrote:Another one that has been there for almost 9 Years is the Beaufort Wes to Aberdeen Asod. Total distance from Beaufort to Aberdeen is about 144 km.
The distance from the provincial border to the bend on the R61 at Beaufort West is 71.6 km.
So maybe, just maybe it does not sit in 2 provinces.
