Tom Tom Older Units will run out of Map Capacity

Discussion of the maps available in South Africa in the various sub-folders: Garmap, Navteq, T4A, OSM, etc.
More sub-folders will be created as we go along and the need arises.

Tom Tom Older Units will run out of Map Capacity

#4914

Post by Shorty »

I have received an email from TOM TOM which in summary notes:

"Since TomTom is no longer creating map updates for older devices, all future map updates and device upgrades will exceed the operational capacities of these devices."

In other words the units listed in https://www.tomtom.com/en_za/obsolete-products/#car will run out of "Lifetime" map support. These are listed as being:

DEVICES NO LONGER SUPPORTED FOR LIFETIME MAPS

GO 750 (LIVE) (W4/W7/W8) XL 30 Series (RB/RC/RH/RI/RM/RN/RO/RV) XXL IQ Routes/Classic (RY/RW/RX/GL/GQ)
ONE 30 Series (PA/PB/PC/PE/PF/PH/PI/PK/PN/PP/PL/PO/PQ/PV) Start (XA/XB/XC/XD) Start²/Start Classic (XN/XM/XF/XH)
XL IQ Routes² (GG/GH/GI/GJ/GP) GO 1000 (LIVE) (TD/TB) GO 1005 (LIVE) (SF/SB)
VIA 110(AG)/130/135(AV/AQ) VIA 120 (LIVE) (AN/AU/FM) GO 700 (M5)
GO 630 (JB) GO 720 (M6/M9) GO 730 (J3/J4)
GO 740 LIVE (WR/WL) GO LIVE 1050 / GO LIVE 2050 (SB) ONE IQ Routes (P1/PS/P2/PU)
XL IQ Routes (RU/RS) XL IQ Routes LIVE (R1/R2) GO 820 (FT)
GO 825 (FY) Start 20(AO)/25(BK) Start 60(WM)
ONE XL (L1/L2/L3/L4/L7/L9) ONE XL HD Traffic Europe (F3) ONE 1st Edition (G1/G2)
ONE 2nd Edition (E1/E2/Z1/Z2/Z3) ONE 3rd Edition (Y1/Y2/Y3/Y4/Y5/Y7/Y8) GO (B1)
GO 300 (M1) GO 500 (2005) (M3) GO 510 (V5)
GO 520 (M2/M4) GO 530 (J1/J2) GO 540 LIVE (WT)
GO 550 LIVE (W3) GO 710 (V5)

You can of course run a while longer on the maps you use in your Tom Tom unit right now just with slightly lower routing accuracy.

I've been using the Garmap 2013.2 NT maps in my Garmin units (map 6 years ago) and haven't really experienced much trouble, it's no big deal (just some recalculation messages, where a roadway now exists in the latest reality and would be on a newer map, this mostly in urban areas)

Hi Shorty, thank you for the information. As I previously wrote, I think that the Garmin Gps units had their fair run, and are slowly but surely dying a slow death, and no new units coming from Garmin   . Yes, the Garmap map set 2013.3 on my Nuvi's sd card, is still, although outdated, very helpful ..(Frans also referred to the R101 road on the 2013.3 mapset).

Hi Shorty very nice to hear from you.
None of my current units are still on the Garmap map sets but I still have all my old Garmap maps on my laptop including Waterways and I often still refers back to them when I cant find what I am looking for on CN.

Hi Philip & Frans;

Since I left Garmap many things have changed and being retired fully and not mapping actively, there has not been much moolah around to update maps and units. I can't use a watch as a GPS and haven't asked my teenage grandchildren how to work Google maps yet so I've stuck with my Montana 600 and Nuvi 300 would you believe; oh and MapSource   Works fine for me even after 6 years. It may be because I have created a Master POI file which I use to navigate by and in the drive I simply apply common sense when 'strange' instructions occur.

Methinks we should have some coffee again Frans with our laptops coupled in for a while

Slaat my met 'n plank!

Is this not the ballie that drove from Cape Town to Joburg on his bike in something like 6 hours a couple of years ago?
Come to think about it,.....
on more than one occasion.

Howzit uncle Peter?
I assume your time for that run is a bit closer to 8 hours now! :joker:

Yes it's fine, we must arrange for a GTG again.

We really missed your valuable contributions the last couple of years Shorty. Hope we will see more of you.

Yea that motorcycle trip. 1000 miles in less then 24 hours. More than just saddle sore. Dit you not do it twice???

A trip like this is done to earn membership of the Iron Butt association. You need to prove that you have actually done with date and time stamped receipts for meals and at police stations and I seem to remember GPS logs and Photos.

The Iron Butt Association (IBA) is a US-based organization dedicated to endurance motorcycle riding with a claim of over 60,000 members worldwide who tout themselves as the "World's Toughest Riders." One of its more popular slogans is "The World Is Our Playground."
The IBA is a loose-knit organization with only one way to earn membership: ride one of the several rides the IBA certifies. The minimum is the Saddle Sore 1000 – 1,000 miles (1,600 km) in 24 hours or less.
