Gauteng Speedsters Beware

#5503

Post by Phillip Coetser »

Moving Violation Recorders (MVR) is now in use by the Gauteng Traffic Police.
MVR devices are increasingly being used on regional and residential roads as a way of tracking speeding drivers. An MVR records the average speed measured over a minimum of 500 meters. The event is then recorded and downloaded for investigation and prosecution purposes.......https://businesstech.co.za/news/motorin ... h-drivers/

This is not dissimilar to the average-speed-over-distance (ASOD) technology which is currently being used on South Africa’s major national highways – including the N3 and the N1. An ASOD calculates the average speed of a vehicle, measured from the time it passes a camera until it reaches a second camera at a fixed distance away.

This should prove interesting. Are the MVR's fixed or mobile (i.e. it can be setup and taken down the same day or is it a permanent fixture)? If it's the former, then that poses problems in keeping track of where these devices are being used. If it's permanent, then it's location can at least be determined.

Hi Darryl. These mvr's are still very new and not much is known about them so far. We will have to wait until more details is available. According to JMPD a lot of speedsters have been prosecuted.

Further to the above topic, Mvr's (Moving Violation Recorders). The MVR moving violation recorders are mounted in GTP HSU (High Speed Units) Vehicles provide video evidence of Reckless Driving.
A 47yr old driver has been convicted following the arrest when found travelling at an average speed of 228kmh (68,3m/s)
Speeding..It's just not worth it
