Technical Questions

#4835

Post by Phillip Coetser »

Hi all, when you have a technical question about your Gps unit, please be so kind as to supply us with as much information possible about the problem/s, so that we can try and help you as best we can. Also feel free to post your question in Afrikaans, if that would make it easier for you. Please ensure that the unit you're having a problem with, has the latest software and map set installed, making use of Garmin Express, (availble here...https://www.garmin.com/en-US/software/express) to check for the latest updates for your unit. Remember that not all Garmin Gps's have the same problems, and interfaces.

• Unit make and model..Nüvi etc.
• A detailed description of the problem/s.
• And be so kind to report back to the forum if your problem had been resolved.

Time Zone Map Update

#5452

Post by Phillip Coetser »

Hi all,
A Time Zone Map update, software version 28.00, is now available via Garmin Express. This update is only applicable for Jordan Kiribati, The Bahamas and Samoa.
What is a Garmin Time Zone Map? It is a proprietary database for Garmin devices which allows to match GPS location coordinates with a time-zone.

» Also available via Garmin Express, is a Proximity Text GLX all languages.
What is Garmin proximity alert text?
» The proximity alarm alerts you when you are within a specified range of a location. For example, if you set a proximity alarm for a waypoint with a radius of 3.5Km's , the device gives an alert
once you are within reach of the waypoint.

Regards.

Good day
I own a Nuvi 2360 with lifetime map updates as well as Traffic updates via a GTM 25 FM traffic updater. This function has stopped working and I am unable to get it functioning. Can anyone advise if traffic updates via the FM transmitter has been discontinued in South Africa. I do however still get the map updates.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I am not sure the Altec Nedstar system who supplied the data is s till up and running. The newer PND's use a cell phone link to supply the traffic information. I have it up and running on my 51 Drive Assist and it is working very well.
I have sent a query through to Denice who worked with the system at Altec but I am not sure if she still is with them.
I will also see if Frans know if it is still going. He used to use it when going through to JHB

Thank you very much Jan I really appreciate your response we actually suspected that the service has been discontinued. It seems the way forward is now Google maps as the Garmin is of no use without traffic as well as the poor performance of the City Navigator maps.
Have a good evening.

I will look into this when travelling to Gauteng next week.

@Ben,

Install Waze app on your phone. Much better than Google Maps.

Hi Ben, yes Tom Tom devices are avaiable in SA,
have a look here....https://www.tomtom.com/en_za/navigation/car-gps/ and depending on your phone make, you can download a free trial from Google Playstore. Outdoor Warehouse might also have these items in stock.
Hope this helps.

I have been to Johannesburg and surrounds three times since the above post.
NO traffic icon appeared on my Nuvi 3790 , even when sitting in heavy traffic jams.
