Operating Systems

#1771

Post by fugglefeet »

Hi all,

I thought I would throw this one out there for the fun of it. Here is an operating system that doesn't normally see its way onto desktops. But who said being normal is interesting?

P.S. This is Oracle Solaris 11.1 with Gnome 2 for its GUI.

I know of at least one Major Printer company that uses this operating system as the Desktop on their Printing Front Ends. :ugeek:
And has been doing so for the last 20 years or so.
I think that it runs on Unix System V
It's ultra stable and if you are a developer or a wannabe developer you can actually use it for free perpetually.
Oracle Solaris 11 can be downloaded from the Oracle Technical Network under the terms of the Oracle Technology Network Developer Licensing Terms for Oracle Solaris which permits for a perpetual license for the purposes of developing, testing, prototyping and demonstrating applications on Oracle.

Hehe,

Who would have thought that we would see the day that this forum is running on Oracle Solaris 11?

Hi all,

Here is another interesting operating system that for obvious reasons, didn't grab the news headlines:-

Hi all,

I have recently decided to move away from the Microsoft stable and try something completely different. Having tried variants of Linux, Oracle Solaris and the command line version of FreeBSD (which was used to host the forum software once in its early days), I have now loaded a new beast on a laptop and I am busy testing it to see how it performs. The OS? It is called TrueOS, which is a latest release of FreeBSD with a user interface to boot.
